FREMONT - The city has plenty of road salt and liquid deicer on hand to battle any icy roads and sub-freezing temperatures this winter, Fremont Street Superintendent Bill Guhn said Thursday.
Fremont got its first taste of winter Nov. 11, when an early snowfall covered city streets.
Guhn said the city has 1,500 to 1,700 tons of road salt on hand between its street department facility and a new site on Oak Harbor Road.
"We're actually in really good shape," Guhn said.
The city announced in May 2018 that the city's street department would also use the former Ohio Department of Transportation facility on Oak Harbor Road to store salt and brine.
Fremont bought the building and the 4.3-acre site from ODOT for $275,000. The city moved its water and sewer department office to the site.
There are two brine tanks on site, as well as a salt dome, which allowed the city to double the amount of road salt it could place in storage.
Guhn said the city has applied to purchase 1,200 additional tons of road salt.
Fremont has about 8,000 gallons of beet-based liquid deicer available to deice roads.
The city also has a contract with ODOT for deicer, Guhn said.
Safety Service Director Kenneth Frost said the city salted some of its intersections in November during the season's first snow, but primarily used liquid deicer on the roads.
"We're spending less this year because last year we stocked up on it," Frost said.
Frost said the city keeps extra road salt on hand for Fremont City Schools and Terra State Community College that can be used by those schools in the event of icy conditions.
The worst winter season in recent memory was probably 2013-2014, Guhn said. A record 80 inches of snow fell in the Fremont area during that season.
Guhn said the city used close to 1,500 tons of road salt and 7,000 gallons of liquid deicer on the roads.
When there's heavy snowfall, the city does not use much salt on the roads.
Guhn said the focus is usually on just clearing the snow off the roadways in those situations.
With city leaf pickup completed this year, Guhn said the street department has two additional trucks freed up for winter weather.
