Q: Why are plows and salt trucks kept to speeds of 35 miles per hour?
A: The New York State Thruway Authority and a salt bounce scatter study out of Michigan State University give the same reason: They say that “plow trucks drive slowly when clearing and salting roads. Their reduced speed allows salt to stay in travel lanes, limiting the amount that scatters off the road. This saves taxpayer money and minimizes environmental impacts.”
