The Long-term Effects of Salt - week.com

Some may not know that our area is also known as the salt-belt which mean. When winter weather comes it's time to get those roads and walkways salted, but there is a downside.

According to the Peoria County Highway Department salt is known as a necessary evil as it helps to lower the freezing point of snow and water and reduces the amount of accidents, but once the snow melts it causes the salt to seep into cracks in the pavement and if it refreezes… What do we have? Potholes! In a second scenario if salt does not flow into the roadways, it may drain into the groundwater, local streams and lakes causing a damage to aquatic ecosystems.

Peoria County Highway Department Operations Officer, Mark Gilles, said, "When it does melt it is not good on the road surface, the infrastructure, and the bridge beams, stuff like that, it's highly corrosive". Gilles added, "We try to minimize the impact on the environment the best we can".

The Peoria County highway department ensures that they are aware of the risks that come with salting roadways so they make sure to use it sparingly and when it is one hundred percent necessary.
