Neighbors help clothe the homeless as Salt Lake City plans new shelter - KJZZ

Dozens of people in Sugar House plan to come together Monday morning to welcome their new neighbors.

The event is a donation drive, following city council’s zoning approval on Friday for a temporary shelter in the neighborhood. It will have 145 cots that are only available during the winter.

The Sugar House Community Council welcomes others to join the group at 11 a.m. Monday at 2239 Highland Drive in Salt Lake City, asking people to bring clothing — especially socks, outerwear and hand warmers.

Plans for a new shelter come following concerns over capacity at the new system of three homeless resource centers in the Salt Lake City area.

The group that recently led a protest near city hall is still calling for a new permanent shelter.
